WORDS OF CURRENT INTEREST

All the gods of the nations are idols (Ps. 96:5)

The word translated "idols" is 'elilim, which has the literal meaning of "nothingnesses," or, as the margin of the Revised Version puts it, "things of nought." It may well have been that, as some scholars contend, there is a play upon words intended in the original, "All the gods ('elohim) of the nations are things of nought ('elilim) Briggs translates. "The gods of the peoples are nothings."

Fear before him, all the earth (Ps. 96:9)
