At the time I became acquainted...
At the time I became acquainted with Christian Science, I was suffering from frequent colds, which were forcing me to be away from my work two or three weeks out of a year. As I started to study Science and progressed in my understanding of God, the colds diminished, until now I scarcely know what it is to experience anything of that nature.
I found that when one takes up the study of Christian Science and is willing to learn the rules and abide by them, he is soon able to demonstrate to some degree the power of Truth. In Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 147): "Late in the nineteenth century I demonstrated the divine rules of Christian Science. They were submitted to the broadest practical test, and everywhere, when honestly applied under circumstances where demonstration was humanly possible, this Science showed that Truth had lost none of its divine and healing efficacy, even though centuries had passed away since Jesus practised these rules on the hills of Judæa and in the valleys of Galilee."
At one time I was experiencing great discomfort from a sore spot in my mouth and for several days was unable to eat any solid foods. One afternoon, feeling particularly discouraged about the condition, I suddenly thought of the words of the Master, Christ Jesus, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32). Recalling that earlier in the day I had prayerfully studied the Lesson-Sermon, made up of quotations from the Bible and from Science and Health which are given in the Quarterly, and realizing that what I had read in these books was the truth, I felt a great surge of gratitude for them and at that moment was completely free. I immediately prepared a meal (which included crisp toast) and was able to enjoy it with no discomfort whatsoever.
