I first heard of Christian Science...

I first heard of Christian Science from my mother. She recommended that I ask for treatment in Science for the healing of an unsightly skin condition which I had had for a few years. I was not willing at that time to accept Science, for I still believed in the efficacy of medication and material means for healing.

But after going through much suffering, I received at the darkest period in my experience a letter from a practitioner, a friend of my mother, which was to change my whole outlook on life. This letter contained a Bible passage, part of which reads (I Cor. 13:1), "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal."

I thought, "If I had wealth, beauty, and all material things, they would be meaningless, 'sounding brass,' without a loving spirit." I realized that I had been holding a sense of resentment against a member of my family for many years and that now I must be loving and forgiving. I gained a new purpose in life: to love more and to learn more of Christian Science.
