When I was a young child and...
When I was a young child and Christian Science was newly discovered, Mother read in the daily newspaper a short paragraph written by Mary Baker Eddy stating a few truths concerning the religion. Immediately she said, "Whatever this is, I want it."
In a short time she located a practitioner in a nearby town. Since we were out in the country, she would walk to the railroad track, flag the train, and go to spend most of the day listening to this dear lady. She would come home walking on air. As a result of her study her children received the blessings of many healings.
I myself experienced the healing of a goiter. I was teaching at the time. My principal accosted me one morning saying, "Frances, do you know you have a goiter?"
I said, "No, I hadn't known it, but if I have, I know what to do about it."
Immediately I knew I was guilty of neglecting my daily study of the Bible and of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy. Besides, I was very busy going out with the young people, having, as I thought, a good time. That very night I asked for treatment from a practitioner. I got out my books and began studying in earnest, and from that time on I never faltered in my study.
There was a young doctor in this little town. He reported to the school board that I was a very sick girl and should be asked to resign. One of the members said, "Well, she is a Christian Scientist, and I don't know what you can do about it."
When I heard this I was tempted to keep my neck covered. Quickly I said to myself: "And what are you trying to cover? Nothing!" Every day I thanked God many times for this awakening. It took almost a year before the goiter finally dissolved, but never a day was I absent from school during this experience, and I have not been kept from my duties since that time.
My heart overflows with gratitude for a devout mother, whose understanding enabled her children to go through fiery trials unscathed. For Christ Jesus and for the many provisions in the Manual of The Mother Church by our Leader, among which are class instruction and the yearly association meeting, my gratitude is boundless.—(Mrs.) Frances Chesley Hawk, Olympia, Washington.
