I have never ceased to be grateful to the friends who, seeing my need, sent me the gift of a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.

After reading this book for a few weeks, I had a great desire to be healed of smoking, and I wrote asking for the help of a practitioner. Three days after I had posted the letter, my mother asked what she should do with the cigarettes, cheroots, and cherry wood pipe which I was in the habit of using. When I asked, "Why?" my husband replied, "You have not smoked since the morning after you posted the letter asking for help."

I rejoiced at this quick healing, but I had much to learn. We read in Science and Health (p. 559): "Take divine Science. Read this book from beginning to end. Study it, ponder it. It will be indeed sweet at its first taste, when it heals you; but murmur not over Truth, if you find its digestion bitter." A healing may take not weeks, nor months, but years; but there is joy when the battle is won, and one goes forward with renewed strength and knows how true is that beautiful promise of Christ Jesus, the beloved Way-shower (John 8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
