Early in our marriage, I had a nervous condition. I was overcome with fear: fear of being alone, even in daylight, and a panicky fear of the dark. In despair, for I felt that I was losing my mind, I consulted a doctor. He assured me that I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. He urged me to seek psychiatric help at once. Then I was indeed discouraged, for I knew that we could not afford such help.

At that time we knew nothing of Christian Science. The evening following my talk with the doctor, both my husband and my brother attended a Christian Science lecture just to see what it would be like. They brought home a copy of the Sentinel. Dreading the ordeal of turning out the light and going to bed in the dark, I sat down to read this new magazine.

The first article which met my eye dealt with fear. It seemed as though it had been written especially for me and that both the Sentinel and my husband had been sent to that church on that night to help me. It stated that with God's love constantly surrounding and protecting us, there is no room for fear.
