Because both my parents are students of Christian Science and I had the privilege of attending a Christian Science Sunday School, my boyhood years were very free of illnesses, and I enjoyed many years of Rugby football and other sports without injuries. I also experienced protection from harm in wonderful ways.

When I was about ten years old I was with some friends of my age at a seaside resort where the water was known to have very treacherous currents. One day we saw a couple, who had been swimming close inshore, being dragged out to sea, calling for help, and obviously in serious trouble. A friend and I swam out; but the woman, who was a nonswimmer, was by then so fearful that her companion and the two of us were dragged under by her whenever we tried to help her.

As I felt my own strength going, I found myself praying to God for help. I remembered little after that till I found myself on the beach with my friend close by me. Shortly after we heard that all four of us had been carried inshore by a series of waves, and from there other people had helped us to dry land. I knew that my prayers had been answered.
