The Way of Life

"Life, eternally active, knows no stoppage or stagnation, no fluctuation or excess"

"This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent" (John 17:3). How surely Jesus proved the true way to live! In his daily life he expressed the divine nature, and through every trial he rose higher in the consciousness of God's allness and his own oneness with the Christ-power until finally he made his ascension above the mortal sense of existence.

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 25), "Jesus taught the way of Life by demonstration, that we may understand how this divine Principle heals the sick, casts out error, and triumphs over death."

Generally speaking, it would appear that events having to do with the mortal sense of life are taken for granted. When any physical ailment, disaster, or accident occurs which interferes with the material body, efforts are made to prolong life; yet at the same time death and difficulties are looked upon as inevitable. But in Proverbs we read (16:22), "Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it." Through Jesus' demonstrations and the teachings of Christian Science this understanding may be gained.

When Mrs. Eddy received the revelation of Christian Science, she was able to see clearly that if God was her Life, it was not necessary for her to be bound by material, destructive beliefs. From the time that she arose from a sickbed, healed, when those around her had expected her to die. Mrs. Eddy searched the Scriptures and turned to God for the ability to give to the world the spiritual facts of Life. On page 468 of the textbook, Science and Health, in her answer to the question, "What is Life?" our Leader says: "Life is divine Principle, Mind, Soul, Spirit. Life is without beginning and without end. Eternity, not time, expresses the thought of Life, and time is no part of eternity."

Mrs. Eddy also states (p. 469): "Life is neither in nor of matter. What is termed matter is unknown to Spirit, which includes in itself all substance and is Life eternal. Matter is a human concept. Life is divine Mind. Life is not limited. Death and finiteness are unknown to Life. If Life ever had a beginning, it would also have an ending."

Life, God, is self-existent and complete, forever at the standpoint of fullness and perfection. Life is continuous and has nothing within itself that can ever fade away or be impoverished. Life, eternally active, knows no stoppage or stagnation, no fluctuation or excess. Life needs no replenishment; its vital current is rich and untainted and is ever incorruptible. The law of Life is the law of Love.

Students of Christian Science are proving day by day man's oneness with Life by living spiritually and are thereby protected from many phases of wrong thinking. Life is Mind and is made manifest in right knowing. It is a great privilege to be finding the way to draw upon the wellspring of Life, which is infinitely present and available to all. Every suggestion of a power other than God, every attempt of the devil to say that life is material, can be overcome by our understanding and reflecting the spiritual qualities of Mind and by our claiming as children of God immunity from all mortal mind beliefs.

From girlhood the writer of this article had a condition of the blood commonly called anemia. Every day she took iron and other so-called remedies to improve her strength, but nothing gave her the health she required. At a time when she was suffering from a malignant growth, Christian Science was offered to her. As she read and digested the truths in the textbook, the growth was completely healed.

This healing of course gave her the desire to gain more of that spiritual understanding which she was finding so helpful in her daily life. One day she thought: God is my Life; my Life is God. Since this is true, my expression of Life must be harmonious. My harmony does not depend upon the quality of my blood, as I have always been taught, but upon the quality of my thinking, and I must therefore watch my thoughts very carefully to see that I entertain only those which express God's nature.

Many times she found herself thinking wrongly, but soon she saw that this was not true living, that this thinking was lifeless. The constant effort to unify her thought with Spirit, with Life, Truth, and Love, became easier, more natural. It is right, however, to state that from the time she separated herself from dependence upon blood qualities and knew her oneness with spiritual substance, the healing began; it was completed and has been permanent.

For many years she has enjoyed strength, health, vitality, and spiritual energy. She is able to work long hours and has found abundant reward for her right efforts.

God is Life, and Life is Soul. All true senses exist in Soul; hence they are spiritual, sound, and perfect. All faculties are divinely mental, constituted of spiritual substance, hence always alive. So all suggestions of lack of seeing, hearing, feeling, and knowing are lifeless, mindless, and powerless.

God is Truth and is made manifest in true living. Error, any mortal fear, anything seeming to produce dismay or discord of any name or nature, is a lie and lifeless. How necessary for true living is being obedient to Principle, God! Principle gives us the rule by which to live. Integrity, reliability, uprightness, unchangeableness, are qualities connected with a true sense of Life.

God is Love, and Love is Life; so in order to be really alive, to be a living witness to God's presence and power, it is essential to love. Fear, hate, envy, doubt, discouragement, frustration, have no place in Love; hence all are without any power to live.

We are seeing that in order to live our lives correctly, we must obey the demand being made upon us to know our coexistence with God, who is the only Life. It is gratifying to feel that we are being guided in the right path and are being upheld by God's ever-operative law of harmony and that we have a real purpose for living. Let us live our life to the glory of God.
