Joy in the Morning
"Morning, or light, comes whenever we turn to God"
Have you ever wakened in the night and immediately been beset with a flood of anxieties, unsolved problems, and apprehensions of the future? The writer remembers that as a young girl she was afraid to go to bed at night, and when she did, she often lay awake in the dark. This problem was solved by a wise mother's love and understanding.
Mrs. Eddy says on page 479 of Science and Health, "Darkness and chaos are the imaginary opposites of light, understanding, and eternal harmony, and they are the elements of nothingness." Let us note that powerful word "imaginary." It brings us face to face with the fundamental teaching of Christian Science that since God is good and is All, evil of any sort is unreal.
The Bible states that "all things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made" (John 1: 3). All that He made is good like Himself; hence the dark visions of evil, which seem to take on added intensity in the night, must be phantoms of unreality, though seeming to be real.
For those restless ones who sigh, "Oh, if morning would only come!" we quote a definition from the textbook (p. 591): "Morning. Light; symbol of Truth; revelation and progress." In a literal sense the light of morning dispels darkness, Figuratively, light is a revelation of Truth; and, according to the Bible, Truth is another name for God. Therefore morning, or light, comes whenever we turn to God and know Him as He is, the only source of thought. John tells us that "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all" (I John 1:5).
Christ Jesus understood the nature of God and of man in God's image, and his understanding enabled him to heal and bless by bringing the light of God's presence into the darkness of the period in which he lived. Speaking of his spiritual self as the idea of God, he said (John 8:12), "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."
Certainly the chief privilege and duty of Jesus' followers is to emulate his example. It is plain that our great need is to gain more of the spiritual understanding that Jesus had. This understanding comes by degrees to students of Christian Science and is gained by enlightened prayer, study of the Bible and our textbook, and practice of the truths learned therein. If discouragement besets our path, we must realize that God causes no discouragement; instead He blesses our every effort. Every small ray of light that penetrates the gloom of mortal thinking enables us to take a step forward.
The Psalmist sang (Ps. 27:1), "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?" When we conquer even a small fear, get rid of worry, or rise above irritation, we are letting into our consciousness a measure of the light of spiritual understanding. This understanding shines in the darkness of our night and increases our knowledge of God's love and of His care for us.
Our Leader says on page 202 of Science and Health: "If men would bring to bear upon the study of the Science of Mind half the faith they bestow upon the so-called pains and pleasures of material sense, they would not go on from bad to worse, until disciplined by the prison and the scaffold; but the whole human family would be redeemed through the merits of Christ,— through the perception and acceptance of Truth. For this glorious result Christian Science lights the torch of spiritual understanding."
Just as a young girl's fear of the dark was solved by the love and understanding of her mother, so many a problem of the writer's in adult life, pressing hard upon her in the night, has been solved when she has turned to her Father-Mother God for light in the darkness, with the result that fear and restlessness have been banished, and quiet sleep has followed.
Surely, as a familiar hymn tells us (Hymn No. 425, Christian Science Hymnal), "Joy cometh in the morning." In the light of Truth's revelation, God's morning is ever at hand.
