My introduction to Christian Science...
My introduction to Christian Science came through a Sentinel given to me by a casual acquaintance. I read it thoroughly, and that evening I enjoyed the first peaceful rest I had known for some time. The following morning I went to a Christian Science Reading Room to purchase the textbook referred to in the various articles and testimonies in the Sentinel, namely Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. It happened to be a legal holiday. The Reading Room opened much later than usual; so I had a lengthy wait.
I can still recall praying while I waited that this religion would not take me so far and then leave me comfortless as had other systems. Heretofore, a diligent medical, theological, and intellectual search for the answers to the world's miseries, and particularly to my own, had yielded nothing satisfying or practical.
I obtained a copy of the textbook, took it home, and read it round the clock until I finished it. It offered a logical and complete explanation of being. It dealt thoroughly with the complexities of human experience. And, most wonderful of all, it was in spiritual correlation with the Holy Bible, which I had early been taught to love. My prayer for enlightenment had been fully answered! Thus began for me the unfoldment of the Messianic revelation which has continued to grow ever more glorious.
Christian Science is responsible for the success of my marriage and the harmony of our home. My husband and I knew one another for only a relatively short time before we married. Although we were in perfect accord about moral and spiritual values, we had conflicting temperaments. This fact, plus wartime separations, a cross-country move, and business problems, increased the friction between us. However, through the help of a Christian Science practitioner we rebuilt our affection for each other on a harmonious and permanent basis—the spiritual understanding of man's individual self-completeness. This purer love eventually led to our being accepted by a teacher of Christian Science for class instruction together.
I had a protracted but inspiring healing of severe chronic colds. These colds were of an incapacitating nature, and I had been told by medical authority that they were due to an incurable susceptibility on my part. Happily, I found my immunity to them through Christian Science treatment.
It has been a joy to share the Christ, Truth, with our children. They have not known any religious teaching other than that of Christian Science and consequently have enjoyed excellent health.
I appreciate Mrs. Eddy's unswerving obedience to God in penning and publishing Science and Health. I thank God for this promise which she gives us on page 264 of this textbook and which is being fulfilled in my experience: "When we realize that Life is Spirit, never in nor of matter, this understanding will expand into self-completeness, finding all in God, good, and needing no other consciousness."—(Mrs.) Harriet D. Loeb, Beverly Hills, California.
