On page 463 of the textbook, Science and Health, under the marginal healing "Unhesitating decision," Mrs. Eddy has written, "To decide quickly as to the proper treatment of error—whether error is manifested in forms of sickness, sin, or death—is the first step towards destroying error." The necessity for this alertness was forcibly brought home to me by an extremely painful kidney ailment.

Before complete physical harmony was restored, many hidden errors of thought were uncovered that had not been promptly refused admittance when they first sought entrance into my thinking. The accumulation of many petty irritations and disappointments had to be completely eradicated. It became apparent that a sense of injustice felt as a result of estate settlements had been smoldering for many years and that I had been suffering from resentment more recently on other accounts too. I endeavored to fill my thought with love and forgiveness.

In the few weeks during which the renovating process was going on, I had a deep and humble desire to know more of God's law and to be obedient to it and to know the truth of man. In the words of the Psalmist, I prayed, "Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts" (Ps. 139:23). The hymns in the Christian Science Hymnal played a very important part in the daily work. I recall especially these lines from Hymn No. 278 which came as a benediction:
