My son, when ten years of age, became seriously ill and was taken to a hospital; the doctors diagnosed the condition as osteomyelitis in a leg bone, and an operation was performed the following morning. He spent a great portion of the next four years in the hospital with his leg in a cast and had several further operations.

During the time he was in the hospital, several of his friends came to visit him; among them was a boy who attended the Christian Science Sunday School. This youngster always expressed great joy and cheered my son very much.

Although he was eventually allowed to come home, the doctors finally decided that it was necessary for the leg to be amputated. The Sunday before the operation was to be performed, as I was humbly praying for words of comfort and assurance, my son suddenly asked, "Mother, do you think Christian Science could help me?" I knew nothing of Science, but I told him I would look into it. I called on the mother of the boy who attended the Christian Science Sunday School, telling her of our experience and of our desire to have someone come to explain her religion to us.
