Forty years ago, while teaching...

Forty years ago, while teaching my first term of school, I was invited to spend a night with a teacher who was a student of Christian Science. She explained to me that God is Love and told me of the many ways in which she had been blessed by Science, which is the way of Life.

I resolved that I too would investigate Science. But twenty-three years went by before I began its study. By that time I was married, the Second World War was on, and our only son was serving in the armed services in the Pacific area. I was teaching school during the day, and at night I seemed to be always fighting naval battles in my sleep. The mornings found me exhausted as I went to my day's work.

It was at this point that I began to think of Christian Science. I began to study it, and I saw at once that Science was the religion I had always wanted. My fears left. When I thought of our son, I immediately thought of the words from Deuteronomy (33: 27), "The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms." Later our son wrote that although his ship had broken nearly in two on a reef, he was safe and unharmed.
