RADIO PROGRAM No. 408 - Right Motives Ensure a Rewarding Career

SPEAKER: Sometimes honest ambition can get lost in a quest for fame, wealth, prestige. And the following of this selfish course can lead only to frustration and failure, as our guest discovered. But Mrs. Renie Conley, of Los Angeles, California, woke up to her mistake and found a satisfying solution. Here she is to tell you about her experience.

MRS. CONLEY: There was a time in my life when I lost interest in spiritual things. I began to crave more money, more importance, more fame. This happened after I was put under contract as a costume designer with one of the major motion picture studios in Hollywood.

As I look back now, I can see that after I had the security of a regular contract I became extremely ambitious. I began to worship many false gods—sophistication, popularity, influence. I wanted to be a big name; so I did everything I could to make my name well known and sought after. I hired a publicity agent. I cultivated everyone I could think of and was always taking press people to lunch. I was in an atmosphere where there was much adulation of personality, and so I was seeking personal adulation too.
