In 1951 I married a Christian Scientist...

In 1951 I married a Christian Scientist, and it was through her that I myself became a Scientist. I enjoyed watching sports, but my wife did not care for them, although she went with me to see them. She went to the Christian Science church service on Sundays. I did not go to the service, but remained at home. One day she said to me: "I try to please you by going to sports events. You ought to come to church with me someday!"

I agreed to, and I found that although I had gone intending to be simply a spectator, on entering the church I was impressed by the love manifested by everyone present and also by certain selections from the Bible and from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which were read from the desk.

The next day I took Science and Health and began to read it. Usually when I read a novel, Ihad a desire to light a cigarette. As I read the textbook I did not even think of smoking, being fully absorbed in what I was reading. I read more of the book every day, and when I reached page 407 these words held my attention: "Puffing the obnoxious fumes of tobacco, or chewing a leaf naturally attractive to no creature except a loathsome worm, is at least disgusting."
