In the Preface to "Miscellaneous Writings"...

In the Preface to "Miscellaneous Writings" by Mrs. Eddy we find this statement (p. xi): "While no offering can liquidate one's debt of gratitude to God, the fervent heart and willing hand are not unknown to nor unrewarded by Him." It is with a fervent heart and a willing hand that I submit this testimony.

For many years I had attended a Church of Christ, Scientist, with my husband, and our three sons were enrolled in the Sunday School. I loved Christian Science and believed in it, but I had never felt it important for me to join the church.

One day I was using my electric mixer, when my hand became caught in the beaters. I immediately declared some of the truths of Christian Science and disconnected the plug; but my hand had begun to swell, and I was unable to release it. My next door neighbor was a devout Christian Scientist; so I went to her. When she saw my predicament, she called her husband, and he released my hand. She wrapped a towel around it and repeated many statements of truth, including the words, "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all," from "the scientific statement of being," found on page 468 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
