RADIO PROGRAM No. 386 - Lifting the Burden of Tragedy

SPEAKER: Many people feel their lives are governed by some mysterious force called fate—sometimes good, sometimes cruel. Our guest, Mrs. Margaret Gildroy, of Everett, Washington, believed this, and she went through a great deal of misery and sorrow. But she learned that God is unfailing Love and that His will is not trouble and tragedy for man.

MRS. GILDROY: From the time I was just a little girl, it seemed as if tragedy stalked me continually. People would say: "Poor Margaret. She was born under an unlucky star." There was a lot of sorrow during my childhood. I lost my own mother when I was three, and my stepmother when I was twelve, and I also lost a brother. This pattern continued later on. After I was married, we lost a little boy and a few years later, one of our daughters. After that I lost all desire to live and seemed unable to pull myself out of the mental depression into which I'd sunk. I could not reconcile my idea of a just and loving God with the things that had happened to me. Most of my life I'd gone to church—many churches —and had studied other religions. I'd prayed desperately to no avail. I thought, If it weren't for our other children, I just couldn't go on.

I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't found Christian Science. My aunt sent me a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. She said. "Study this, and it will heal your grief." So I read the book, but with very little understanding; so I struggled on another year or so.
