I had been brought up in Christian Science...
I had been brought up in Christian Science from an early age, but in later years, with a growing family of my own, I had departed in many ways from its teachings. I began to suffer many physical ailments, and I was not mentally at peace. I felt a lack of something in my life.
For five months out of each year for twelve years, I suffered from hay fever. The condition was so severe that I was unable to take part in my usual activities and had to spend many nights sitting up because of the difficulty I experienced in breathing. I visited specialists and tried every new remedy as it appeared. At the same time I was suffering from chronic anemia, and the doctors predicted that I should have to continue having two or three injections a week for the rest of my life because of this condition. I also had gall bladder trouble and constant headaches.
One day toward the end of the summer of 1949, which I had spent at the seacoast for relief of hay fever, I picked up a copy of the Sentinel which my sister had left for me and read the words from the Bible (Josh. 24:15), "Choose you this day whom ye will serve." They seemed to stand out with great emphasis. And so I chose—that day—and experienced a wonderful feeling! I realized then that I had been trying to serve two masters, matter and Spirit, putting a belief of life, substance, and intelligence as existent in matter above the omnipotence and omnipresence of the one Spirit, God, the only power and presence.
