At the age of ten I began to have attacks of hay fever and asthma. The symptoms were very disagreeable and caused me much discomfort. My paternal grandfather, who lived with us, also suffered from this affliction, and we more or less resigned ourselves to having to endure the difficulty for the rest of our lives.

Some years later I enrolled in a college in an adjoining state. At the beginning of college, I experienced much suffering as well as inconvenience and embarrassment; I even tried to avoid making friends with my classmates, thinking I might be offensive to them because of the symptoms of hay fever and asthma, which were much in evidence. Then I recalled a brief acquaintance I had had with Christian Science some nine years previously. Since then I had often thought that I should like to know more about it; so on the second Sunday morning I was away from home, I attended my first Christian Science church service. During the service all the symptoms left me.

The next day I visited a Christian Science Reading Room and purchased a Bible and a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, together with a Christian Science Quarterly, outlining the weekly Lesson-Sermons. Immediately I began an earnest and daily study of these two books. My mother also purchased them and began to study after she saw what Christian Science had done for me.
