It was with much discouragement...

It was with much discouragement and little hope that I visited the office of a Christian Science practitioner and told her of my disappointing experience in seeking help from medical doctors for a stubborn and unsightly skin condition diagnosed by them as acne. The last physician, after several months of treatment, told me that he had exhausted his knowledge of remedies for the disease, but felt that there had been no improvement; and therefore he could no longer conscientiously take my money.

After doing my best to impress the practitioner with the hopelessness of the situation, I asked her in a despairing voice, "Do you think that Christian Science can help me?" Although it was many years ago, I vividly remember her reply. Without hesitation, and with deep conviction, she said, "I know that it can." Her words startled me. The most any doctor had ever assured me was that he hoped to help me.

Then and there I decided that anything which inspired such confidence in one was certainly worth investigating, even though I might not find healing. I listened eagerly to the practitioner's explanation of Christian Science and left her office with new hope. I went directly to a cafeteria, where I selected and ate food which I had not dared to eat for two years. You see, the practitioner had explained to me that one need not mentally bow down to food, since God has given man dominion.
