Christian Science came into my...
Christian Science came into my life when I was nine years of age. From that time on I read the Dutch edition of The Herald of Christian Science regularly. I was then very much interested in the articles written especially for children and young people. Reading them gave me a joyous and satisfactory feeling, and I became acquainted with the English language.
I have felt the ever-present protection of God, divine Love and Truth, many times. It was particularly evident during the Second World War when I was interned in the Far East. At that time the Bible was my only support. Many times I read, and it was good to know: "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. ... He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust" (Ps. 91:1–4). By striving to remain conscious of the presence of Love and Truth, I was protected in several dangerous situations.
I should also like to mention a quick healing I experienced more recently. A growth in my throat, which was very painful, made it difficult for me to eat normally. I tried to apply the healing truths of Christian Science myself, but the pain and the inconvenience became worse. I felt lonesome, depressed, disillusioned, and very tired. So I went to see a practitioner, and after my talk with her I began to see that by accepting those discordant suggestions about myself, I was being disobedient to God's law. I turned my thoughts to God and realized that by expressing love, I was obedient to Love, and by expressing good, I was obedient to God. This light brought me healing. The next day the pain was completely gone, and by the following day the growth had disappeared.
