I had had a number of years of unhappiness, confused thinking, and, finally, poor health before the persistent study of Christian Science and adherence to its Christly truths broke the spell of disillusionment that bound me. Through reliance on Science I was rewarded with good health, a harmonious home, satisfying and fruitful employment, and a clear understanding of God and His unchanging, protective love for man.

I cannot say that the way was easy, because it was not. There were much false pride, selfishness, criticism, vanity, and self-will to be overcome. As our Leader tells us in Science and Health (p. 404), "Hatred, envy, dishonesty, fear, and so forth, make a man sick, and neither material medicine nor Mind can help him permanently, even in body, unless it makes him better mentally, and so delivers him from his destroyers." As a result of wrong thinking and acting, I had experienced bitter personal relationships and illness.

In the same way as the captain might order cargo to be thrown overboard in an effort to save a sinking ship, I was forced to discard much material thinking. I reached out to God through Christian Science and found Him, divine Life. I have been healed of smoking, social drinking, the use of tea and coffee, nervous anxiety, a discordant skin condition, and a painful condition of one foot which prevented me from walking. Many unpleasant traits of character have been dissolved, and much fear has fallen away as my spiritual understanding has increased.
