For eleven years, commencing in 1928, I was in a state of chronic ill-health. This time of suffering began gradually with attacks of neuralgia in the head until finally I was in constant pain. I took so much medicine to alleviate the pain that finally I was completely drugged, and to correct this condition I fasted for four weeks. I was so weak that I needed to have constant care. The doctors I consulted helped me to the best of their knowledge, but the cost of the medical treatment I was receiving made it necessary for me to work very hard at my profession despite my weakened condition.

In 1939 a Christian Scientist twice gave me a copy of The Herald of Christian Science (German Edition). Then I began to attend a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. Soon afterward I had my first healing in Science. I had crushed one of my fingers, the nail was discolored, and it appeared as though the finger would not regain its normal shape.
