THE RICHES OF GOD'S KINGDOM

[Original in German]

Christ Jesus often referred to nature when he wished to explain divine laws. To illustrate God's unfailing provision and care for His creation, Jesus called his hearers' attention to the birds, the lilies, and the grass of the field and said (Matt. 6:30–33): "Shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? ... Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Therefore in the measure that we seek the kingdom of God and express the divine qualities of love, humility, gentleness, joy, and peace, our supply is assured, and we shall have all that we need.

Because of unusual conditions prevailing in his country a young Christian Scientist and his family were obliged to give up their home and all of their material possessions and leave the city in which they lived. Resignation, sorrow, anxiety, and fear tried to gain control of the Scientist's consciousness. However, with all the power of his understanding of Christian Science, he resisted the suggestions of error that he was now homeless and poor.

One lovely summer morning this young man climbed a hill from the top of which he had a wide view of a beautiful landscape. After he had taken in every detail within his field of vision, he asked himself, "What lesson can I learn from the beauty, harmony, and abundance lying before me?" Great joy came over him when he recalled Mrs. Eddy's words in Science and Health (p. 326), "All nature teaches God's love to man, but man cannot love God supremely and set his whole affections on spiritual things, while loving the material or trusting in it more than in the spiritual."
