"PROGRESS IS BORN OF EXPERIENCE"

Progress looms large in the thought of the whole world. We hear on every side of individuals and nations, great and small, striving for progress, freedom, understanding, and peace. Mankind will accomplish lasting good only as they build on the foundations and rules advanced by Christ Jesus, who always insisted on love for God and love for his fellow men.

Christian Science teaches that progress is an entirely mental process, a spiritual state of thinking. Our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, writes in Science and Health (p. 233): "Every day makes its demands upon us for higher proofs rather than professions of Christian power. These proofs consist solely in the destruction of sin, sickness, and death by the power of Spirit, as Jesus destroyed them. This is an element of progress, and progress is the law of God, whose law demands of us only what we can certainly fulfil."

We need to understand that progress and improvement coincide. Since one's experience is merely the externalized expression of one's thinking, it can readily be seen how effective Christian Science can be in improving one's daily life by improving, regenerating, and spiritualizing human consciousness. No improvement can be made in God or in His perfect creation, man. That which is perfect cannot be improved upon. The improvement that will result in progress for us will take place in our human experience when something of the negative mortal mind, with its fears, hates, and willful human planning, gives way to a more spiritual and enlightened way of thinking.
