While I was spading the ground,...

While I was spading the ground, preparing for a garden in the spring of the year, a blister formed on my hand; it later broke as I continued to turn the ground over. Being a new student of Christian Science, I thought that all that was necessary for healing was to repeat "the scientific statement of being," given on page 468 of Science and Health. This was not the case, as I learned five days later. The hand pained severely, and the swelling became noticeable.

At that time our company employed a nurse, and the ruling was that a case such as this should be reported. Being obedient, I reported to the nurse, who became very much alarmed at the condition of my hand and voiced the possibility of my losing it. This resulted in my becoming fearful. I left the office and returned home about noon and related the details to my wife, who said that I should see a Christian Science practitioner promptly.

The practitioner lovingly tried to allay my fear by emphasizing man's relationship to God as idea, explaining that God fills all space and that there is no room for any discord or pain in His kingdom. But she sensed what was in my thought: that perhaps a doctor could more quickly help me. She told me to go home and make the decision whether I wanted Christian Science or medical help. In an hour I was to telephone her my decision.
