LETTERS TO THE PRESS FROM CHRISTIAN SCIENCE COMMITTEES ON PUBLICATION

The Christian World

[A recent issue of your paper contained] a number of letters about Christian Science.

Let me reassure [a clergyman contributor] that reliance on spiritual law in Christian Science is not an impersonal, cold thing. Actually, spiritual law is the law of divine Love, and obedience to divine law, as is clear from the Ten Commandments onwards, is the normal means of communion with God. So healing through spiritual law in Christian Science is always accompanied by a sense of God and His love. Indeed, divine Love can heal all things, and no other power equals it in warmth, effectiveness or wonder.

Even so, it is not hard to understand [another contributor's] devotion to medical methods; but such devotion should surely never be used to engraft suppositions of medical reliance on to Luke or the early followers of our Lord; nor would even medical men be too happy with its implied assurance of safety in all things medical.

The fact is that the world is in great need of help to-day. No other method of destroying sin, establishing balanced attitudes and restoring health has ever equalled the purely spiritual method of the great Bible healers; and though it will take a long time for the exact relationship of Christian Science to primitive Christianity to be generally recognised, the fact remains that Mary Baker Eddy has given an enormous stimulus to science, theology, and medicine by her discovery of the divine laws of Life, Truth, and Love, by which Jesus healed sin and sickness.
