"Good is not helpless"
One hears much that is negative regarding the moral standards of today. But actually, moral and spiritual standards have been steadily rising. Powerfully and silently the leaven of Christliness has been influencing people over great areas of the world and has impelled them to seek the justice, mercy, and wisdom that should govern all human action. What these stirring times have been witnessing is the gradual appearing of God's man, made in His likeness, ruled by His impartial law of Love.
The action of Christ, Truth, ever revealing God's mandates, ever asserting His goodness and power, rouses many people to desire progress and equality of opportunity. It stirs a demand for better education and higher living standards, social and economic justice, and religious worship that produces healing results. Progress in attaining these ends would be faster if those seeking them would recognize that all good originates in God, not in human personalities, and that it is unlimited.
Another aspect of our times is that evil, like a tormented beast, has risen in resistance to the pure good that is appearing. Attempting to match the magnitude of good revealed by Christian Science as one Mind, one omnipotent God, materialism threatens to overthrow the spiritual gains made by humanity through past centuries and to establish on earth its own godless modes and beliefs. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 55), "Opposite to good, is the universal claim of evil that seeks the proportions of good."
