CHURCH DEDICATION: ITS DIVINE PURPOSE

In her messages to The Mother Church at the time of the dedications of the Original Edifice and of the Extension, it is interesting to note how little our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, had to say regarding the material structure. With her usual foresight and keen love for the spiritual, she turned her thoughts and those of her followers to the higher things of God. She clearly recognized that the continued growth of the Church of Christ, Scientist, depended on the spiritual thinking of its members.

There is no doubt, however, that she was grateful for the beautiful structure of The Mother Church. The building of such an edifice had been close to her heart for many years. It was an answer to a great need of Christian Scientists for a place of their own in which to worship.

Mrs. Eddy had been used to patient waiting. Through the important steps leading to the organization of the Church of Christ, Scientist, she had learned "that the real church, which was so clearly defined in her own consciousness, must also come in the hearts and minds of her followers before it could be manifested," as Irving C. Tomlinson states on page 114 of his book "Twelve Years with Mary Baker Eddy."
