STANDING ON HOLY GROUND

In the third chapter of Exodus it is related that while Moses was tending a flock of sheep on "the backside of the desert," he beheld an unusual sight—a bush which burned with fire yet was not consumed. As Moses turned aside to examine the phenomenon, he heard his name called twice. Answering, "Here am I," he was commanded,

"Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground."

Then, in that lonely, isolated spot, it was made known to Moses that he had been chosen by God for a most important work, that of leading his fellow Israelites out of bondage to the Egyptians. Moses' humility and devotion to God made him receptive to the voice of Truth and fitted him for his great and far-reaching work as leader of the Israelites.
