Physicians have all seen the results of the power of prayer, and prayer can be as real as terrestrial gravity. Every physician has seen men and women, after all therapy has failed, lifter out of disease and melancholy by the serene effort of prayer. It is the only power in the world that seems to overcome the so-called laws of nature. The occasions on which prayer has done this have been termed miracles. But a constant and quieter miracle takes place daily in the hearts and minds of men and women with a steady flow of sustaining power in their daily lives.

Too many people regard prayer as a formalized routine of words, as refuge for weaklings, or a petition for material things; that this prayer can only be offered in a house of worship or a so-called holy place. One sadly undervalues and underestimates prayer on these terms. . . .
