SCIENCE AND THE BODY

The example of Christ Jesus is the Christian's guide, and his example shows that the human body is not to be despised but is to be blessed by Christ, Truth. Thus it is brought under the control of God, divine Mind, and its limitations are gradually removed. The Master healed multitudes as well as individuals, and he did this without drugs, showing that mental means for attaining health are available and sufficient when sought in God.

Christian Science, the Science which Jesus demonstrated fully, follows the example of the Master. It restores the normal action of the body by restoring the energies that constitute health. This is a vital lesson to learn in an energy-conscious age, a lesson which medical physicians will do well to understand. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 394): "By conceding power to discord, a large majority of doctors depress mental energy, which is the only real recuperative power. Knowledge that we can accomplish the good we hope for, stimulates the system to act in the direction which Mind points out."

Hope, faith, and understanding make thought active in the right direction; whereas fear, hopelessness, and ignorance of divine Mind's ability to restore health fully have the opposite effect. Jesus commended the faith of those who came to him for healing. He said to the woman who touched his garment (Matt. 9:22), "Thy faith hath made thee whole." And to the two blind men who followed him, begging mercy, he said, "According to your faith be it unto you." Such faith was a dominating, positive energy in the minds of those expectant people. It brought vitality to their depressed human energies, thus destroying the mental states which had produced abnormal, diseased conditions.
