SIGNS OF THE TIMES

We are faced today with a situation which earnestly demands our attention. Our Master, Christ Jesus, emphasized the need of spiritual discernment when he said (Matt. 16:3), "Ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?"

Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, explains this statement in a passage from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she writes (p. 233): "Already the shadow of His right hand rests upon the hour. Ye who can discern the face of the sky,—the sign material,—how much more should ye discern the sign mental, and compass the destruction of sin and sickness by overcoming the thoughts which produce them, and by understanding the spiritual idea which corrects and destroys them."

It should be recognized that there are today millions of human beings who do not believe in God. In some parts of the world a vigorous campaign is waged against the belief in God, and disadvantages are experienced by those who worship and acknowledge Him. To a Christian Scientist, this attitude is absurd, because to him God and good are synonymous; and he cannot truthfully say he does not desire and seek after good. Indeed his whole effort is usually imbued with that purpose.
