When I was a child, the whole...
When I was a child, the whole family—father, mother, and four children—were attacked by what is known as typhoid-pneumonia. Mother had been studying Christian Science for only a short time; but because she had been healed by it of neuralgia, lack of strength in general, and other difficulties, she and my father decided to trust Christian Science alone for help. The others recovered quickly, but I did not respond so readily. For a few weeks I could not even speak and was not able to care for myself at all.
The neighbors, friends, and relatives condemned my parents severely, even threatening them with tarring and feathering. Articles appeared in the newspapers suggesting that the law should be resorted to in order to compel them to employ a physician, for otherwise I could not possibly live; and even if I should live, I would always be a cripple and would be mentally deficient.
