NOW ARE WE THE SONS OF GOD"

"BELOVED, now are we the sons of God" (I John 3:2). A shy and rather fearful little boy heard these words read at the close of the service in a Church of Christ, Scientist, to which he had been taken. He had understood little of the service, but these few words made a deep impression on him; they had a comforting and reassuring effect which he long remembered.

Do we, who regularly attend Christian Science services and hear these words read, week after week throughout the years, appreciate their full significance? Do we claim out sonship? Do we act as sons of God? Probably few can answer these questions affirmatively without some reservations. Yet to have given this statement so prominent a place in the Sunday services, our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, must have regarded it as of paramount importance. Let us consider what sonship with God means.

To illustrate: to the best of his ability, a loving human parent does all within his power for his child, providing for his needs and pleasures, educating and training him. He continues to watch over and care for him until he is able to provide for himself. God's bounty is ever available to His sons. His resources are limitless; His capacity to bless knows no bounds. His intelligent guidance is equal to every contingency, and His watchful care and protection are ceaselessly in operation. His sons do not reach the state of being able to or desirous of providing for themselves. God's sons are always His perfect reflections.
