WHAT CAN I DO?

When Christ Jesus fed a multitude of five thousand people with five barley loaves and two small fishes, he proved how one spiritually alert individual can help to meet the need of many. The record of this so-called miracle is given in the New Testament in all four of the Gospels. But in one of them alone there is a brief statement of particular interest which points to the importance of faith in God's power to meet our human needs.

One of the disciples, indicating that there were only a few loaves and fishes available, asked (John 6:9), "But what are they among so many?" Jesus, however, was not deterred by this question. It is recorded that he gave thanks. In that moment of gratitude and its assurance of God's ever-present resources, the way was opened for the human need to be met.

What am I among so many? This may be the plaint today of many who, desiring to be helpful to their fellow men, see the great work to be accomplished. And they become fainthearted because of the apparent impossibility of accomplishing the task confronting them.
