MATTER OR SPIRIT?

The Bible teaches spiritual causation; it shows that Spirit, not matter, is the basis of being. The Psalmist, conscious of things unseen to the physical senses, declared of God (Ps. 86:10), "Thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone." Christian Science accords with this premise and proves that God, divine Mind, is the creative Principle of all reality.

Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 268): "Belief in a material basis, from which may be deduced all rationality, is slowly yielding to the idea of a metaphysical basis, looking away from matter to Mind as the cause of every effect. Materialistic hypotheses challenge metaphysics to meet in final combat." And Mrs. Eddy, referring to this, calls it a revolutionary period.

Unless we understand the distinction between the method of Christian Science and material, or partly material, systems of thought, we are likely to look with dismay upon the revolutionary times in which we live. But when we grasp the issues and learn of the unreality of matter, which is Spirit's opposite, we are assured of God's ability to sustain and make victorious the divine metaphysics He has revealed.
