When I was a young woman I...

When I was a young woman I became a medical nurse. During those early years I had a growing conviction that the medical profession had not the real answer to the ills of mankind, and I had a great desire to heal. Then I turned to the study of psychology. That too proved to be an inadequate answer, for the treatment afforded those seeking help rarely reached the root of the problem.

I then came to the conclusion that spiritual healing was the answer. To this end I explored many methods, none of which satisfied me. All this time I had suffered from a spinal weakness coupled with an acute abdominal condition necessitating a special support. Over and over again came the thought (Luke 4:23), "Physician, heal thyself." It was a challenge, and I prayed often, searching the Bible for comfort and guidance.

I grew worse, and attacks of pain were more frequent. Discouraged and frustrated, I felt that the search for spiritual healing would never bear fruit and that semi-invalidism would be my lot. At that point an acquaintance introduced me to the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and asked me to read it.
