For several years I had been interested in Christian Science, but I was constantly struggling with the tobacco and social drinking habits. I often wished I could find time enough to study more earnestly and understand my way out of these problems, but I found a thousand excuses for not doing so.

Then all of a sudden I lost my job. Since I had a wife, three children, and a brand new home, the situation looked desperate from every human angle. I finally turned wholeheartedly to the study of Christian Science and sought the help of a Christian Science practitioner. He lovingly helped me and showed me that the despair which was slowly becoming more than I could bear had no foundation, because God is the only power.

For three months I hunted persistently for a position and spent every spare minute studying Christian Science in Reading Rooms, on trains, and at home. During this time the tobacco habit of fifteen years' standing was healed. When I had overcome the fear of the displeasure of friends and business associates because I did not drink, I was also healed of the desire for alcohol.
