DOMINION OVER DESTRUCTIVE FORCE

Earthquake, wind, flood, fire, and other evidences of physical force have convinced mankind over the centuries that matter possesses the power to destroy. And in this present day the use of atomic or nuclear energy for destructive purposes seems to confirm this conviction. Indeed, many fear that this material energy which physical science has uncovered may be used to destroy great masses of humanity and useful property, perhaps even the earth itself.

But we read in the Bible (Ps. 62:11), "God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God." Christian Science, in complete agreement with the Bible, declares that God, not matter, is the source of all true power—in fact, that He is the supreme and only power. This Science attributes not only all power to God, but all wisdom, justice, love, and goodness as well. It reveals that God is Spirit, wholly unlike matter. He is perfect Mind, ever present as Life, filling all space as Truth, encompassing all being as divine Love.

Does this all-wise, all-loving God use His unlimited power to destroy mankind or those things which are useful to them? Never! God's power can only bless mankind; it operates to sustain all that is good and to destroy only that which is evil. Mary Baker Eddy says in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 339), "Divine Life destroys death, Truth destroys error, and Love destroys hate." Through prayer we can demonstrate that God is omnipotent and supreme in the so-called physical realm as He is in the spiritual, for He is omnipresent, infinite.
