OUR HEALING MISSIONARIES

The remedy for the turbulence so obvious in the world today is assiduously being sought by many men and women. Universal and complete deliverance from disease and disaster, war and want, corruption and crime, can no more be achieved by the human mind, however, than one can lift himself out of the mire by his own bootstraps. No alleviation for the world's ills flows from a material source. It is only as Christ, Truth, gains entrance into human consciousness, correcting the erroneous concepts of life and being, that the permanent healing of humanity's ills will be accomplished.

In her unselfed labors for the liberation of mankind from evil, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, early foresaw the need of a periodical to spread abroad her healing system, which is in accord with the Scriptures. Regarding such a publication and the mission she envisioned for it, she said in 188 (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 7): "Looking over the newspapers of the day, one naturally reflects that it is dangerous to live, so loaded with disease seems the very air. These descriptions carry fears to many minds, to be depicted in some future time upon the body. A periodical of our own will counteract to some extent this public nuisance; for through our paper, at the price at which we shall issue it, we shall be able to reach many homes with healing, purifying thought."

What was true concerning the newspapers of Mrs. Eddy's day is true today. The press, radio, and television often portray disease and crime, thereby unwittingly producing the effect of a Pandora's box, out of which flow the very ills these media seek to destroy. Disease and crime are germinated in mortal mind before being manifested on the body or in human affairs. It logically follows that lasting freedom from all evils lies in exposing their unreal nature through the Christianization and spiritualization of individuals.
