"A SOUND MIND"

"God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind," we read in II Timothy (1:7). When understood, this statement brings comforting assurance and great joy. But while we are striving to understand it, the question may arise as to what is "a sound mind." The immediate human observation would be that a person with "a sound mind" is one who has full possession of his faculties and reacts as a normal human being. Looking at the question from the standpoint of Christian Science, however, one makes the more acute observation that one possesses a sound mentality when he understands that man is the reflection of the one divine Mind, God.

The task then for the individual desiring to possess "a sound mind." is for him to claim that God is his Mind and to know that he can possess no mind separate from this one all-powerful, all-knowing, all-inclusive Mind, which fills all space. Accepting this fact, understanding it, and allowing nothing unlike divine Mind to manifest itself in his thoughts, the individual is able to demonstrate mental soundness.

The question then arises, "What exactly is the nature of the Mind which is man's?" If we refer to the verse quoted above, it is obvious that Mind is not fearful. Likewise, Mind has all power and is ever loving. So one who understands that God is man's Mind always expresses kindness, fearlessness, spiritual strength, and ability.
