WHAT IS MAN?

What is man? The answer is given in the first chapter of Genesis, where it is stated that man is made in the image and likeness of God. But the spiritual nature of the man of God's creating, the only man who is or ever has been, is never comprehended by material sense, which falsely claims that man is mortal, made of the dust of the earth. The prophet Isaiah perceived the fallacy of this belief and cried (2:22), "Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?"

The Psalmist, glimpsing the perfection of God's creation, asked this question (Ps. 8:3, 4): "When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?" He continued: "For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet."

In spite of these glimpses of spiritual perfection by certain individuals, many continued to deny the spiritual nature of man, and therefore mankind failed to experience the dominion which the Psalmist acknowledged.
