ABIDING IN CONSCIOUS UNITY WITH GOD

The word "abide" conveys at first an impression of dwelling quietly in a safe place. But there is another and more active meaning: to abide steadfastly by a decision. This demands firmness and resolution to carry through to an objective.

We may remember that Christ Jesus bade his disciples (John 15:4), "Abide in me," or, in other words, to abide in the eternal Christ, Truth, the manifestation of the divine presence, God. Thus the Master emphasized the necessity of realizing man's oneness, or unity, with the Father; and he also enumerated the consequent blessings which follow that realization. He said (John 14:23), "If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him." Thus we may rejoice in obedience to his words; and by our recognition of the real man's inseparability from Spirit, God, we shall be able to demonstrate our dominion over discords of every kind. This ability reveals our birthright, the equal inheritance of each one of God's children.

We are capable of doing the works that Christ Jesus did during his mission on earth, but only insofar as we are able to see, as did the Master, the unreality of the discordant evidence presented to human thought and the reality and perfection of God and man. We must rise above the lie of material belief and be conscious only of that which is always unchangeably true: man's perfect being, altogether good, joyous, whole, eternally reflecting Life and Love.
