Since I was reared in a Christian Science...

Since I was reared in a Christian Science family, many of my early illnesses and other problems were met quickly and effectively with the assistance of my parents or a Christian Science practitioner. The privilege of attending a Christian Science Sunday School, church membership, committee work, and class teaching made me familiar with the teachings of our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.

However, I did not fully apply these teachings for myself until I was forced to do so while serving in the Air Force during World War II. I was the navigator in a bomber crew of six men flying training missions in the western part of the United States. One night our mission was to fly approximately one thousand miles over the Rocky Mountains, using radar for navigational purposes. We had been gone from our base for about an hour when my radar set became inoperative. Half an hour elapsed, and I was unable to repair it.

At this time the main battery caught on fire, and immediately fumes and acid began to fill the cockpit. We transferred to the auxiliary battery, which would give us approximately fifteen minutes' flying time. Then, if we had not found a landing field, we would have to jump in our parachutes.
