In the summer of 1928 my...

In the summer of 1928 my mother became ill with pneumonia. She was taken to a hospital, and we were told she was going to pass on.

One of her sisters requested Christian Science treatment for her. Mother and I had attended a Church of Christ, Scientist, a number of times, and I decided to visit the Reading Room, rather than just wait around the sickbed. The librarian asked if she could help me, and I told her what the doctor had just said about my mother's condition. The librarian recommended that I read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. This I was glad to do, and starting with the chapter on Prayer, I read in that quiet room for perhaps half an hour. Then I went back to the hospital. To my surprise, my mother was sitting up, questioning as to why she was there. Two days later she was home, well.

To my regret, we drifted away from Christian Science soon after this. In 1947, our year-old daughter came down with pneumonia, and the doctor said she must be put into an oxygen tent, though he doubted if he could save her life. My cousin, a student of Christian Science, telephoned me, and I told her what the doctor had said. She asked if I remembered "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468). I replied that I did, and she said, "Stay with it; I'll help you." Within two hours the little girl was asleep. Later on she awakened hungry and in normal health; so I fed her. When the doctor came back, he was amazed to find her well and said he could not understand the change.
