For some time I have wanted to express my gratitude for a healing of overweight. It was a wonderful experience for me and made me realize even more fully that if faithful enough in our work, we can overcome any discordant situation, no matter how long we have accepted it or how serious it may appear.

In November, 1954, I felt overwhelmed by family problems and many small irritating difficulties of my own, such as nosebleeds, dizziness, and ill-humor. At this time I weighed much more than was necessary, and I knew it. I was considering dieting, which I had heard recommended on the radio and television. While I was doing prayerful metaphysical work one morning, it came to me that Christian Scientists do not diet. Right then I decided to work out the problem of overweight through metaphysical treatment. I worked patiently, consistently, and joyfully for several months, and the results were wonderful. It would be hard to express my gratitude in words.

Treatment was started by my referring to all the things Mrs. Eddy says about food, weight, responsibility, and heredity. In a dictionary I looked up the word "weight." One definition is "burden"; another is "ponderability, regarded as a property of matter." On page 591 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I found "matter" defined in part as "Mythology; mortality; another name for mortal mind; illusion." I realized then it was mortal mind that had to be healed.
