RADIO PROGRAM No. 172 - Finding True Happiness

Speaker: We'd like you to hear the experience of a man who learned that enslaving habits do not bring true happiness and who gradually overcame these habits and found lasting happiness by learning more of the true nature of God. Charles H. Schwab of Chicago, Illinois, is our guest today, and he's going to tell you about the experience himself.

Mr. Schwab: From the age of fifteen to about twenty-five, I had the rather questionable reputation of both drinking and gambling to excess, and for five of those years almost all of my income came from various forms of gambling; and during the summer months I spent a good deal of time at the race track. These habits were deep-seated, and, frankly, I had no desire at that time to stop them, nor even considered it necessary or wise to stop them until I commenced the study of Christian Science and got a glimpse of what true happiness really is.

At home we'd had a very happy family life, although we were without any religious training. In 1924 the mother of a friend invited me to attend a little Christian Science church at a summer resort in Wisconsin. The subject was all brand-new to me, but it intrigued me; and upon returning to Chicago, I began to attend a church there and borrowed a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. But I must confess I only read spasmodically and with mild interest.
