A PRELUDE TO PERFECTION

Can we enter the kingdom of God by any way except through the way of righteousness? The answer is, No. A prelude to spiritual perfection is the evangelization of the human character. John the Baptist is one who preached the baptism of repentance. He demanded a change of thought from sin to righteousness; he foresaw the coming of the Christ, although he did not fully understand its significance.

Right thinking and right acting are steps to an understanding of the Christ, as revealed in Christian Science. Just as the clean window-pane lets in the light, so the purified consciousness is better able to understand the joy and dominion of spiritual existence.

Had John understood the practicality of the Christ, he could have escaped the malice of Herodias. In order to nullify the effect of mental malpractice, one must understand the corrective and protective power of Truth. It is not enough to accept only the baptism of John. To be humanly good is a steppingstone to understanding, but to understand the Christ is to be immune from the effects of animality.
