While serving in the Army during...

While serving in the Army during the Second World War, I endeavored to know that God was my true Physician and that it would not be necessary for me to rely on material help of any kind.

My opportunity to prove this truth came one day when I awoke with an abscessed tooth. No pain was present, but I had a swollen jaw. Immediately I began to declare the truth, knowing that Mrs. Eddy states (Science and Health, p. 393): "Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and that in Science man reflects God's government. Have no fear that matter can ache, swell, and be inflamed as the result of a law of any kind, when it is self-evident that matter can have no pain nor inflammation." I firmly held to this statement of the truth.

Others around me became fearful of my condition and advised me to seek medical aid. However, I assured them that I would be able to carry out my duties. The sergeant in charge of our group requested that I report for medical treatment. I informed him that the condition was not serious and that I could do whatever was necessary for me to do. He said that he was responsible for his men and that I must report for sick call; otherwise he would be forced to report me to the company officer.
